African Violets

Saturday, September 30th, 2000

The other week some African Violets I did buy,
They were going cheap, no flowers, I gave a sigh,
But picked them up wondering if they’d bloom,
I placed them in the kitchen, quite a sunny room.

I talked to it, watered it, trimmed off a leaf or two,
Saw some buds coming, would they be pink or blue?
Then just the other day, I looked, there to my disbelief,
A bunch of pure white flowers among each green leaf.

They looked so pretty sitting shaded from the sun,
They brightened me up as a new day had begun.
I looked, and there are many buds waiting to bloom,
I am so glad I bought it and put it in a sunny room.

The plant is healthy and will last years to come,
What a great gift for just a few pennies I won,
Sometimes good things do not always show
Just like my flowers, needed love to really grow.

All She Had

Tuesday, September 12th, 2000

All she had was a pencil in her hand
And a scrap of paper, not very grand,
To inspire the world in any way,
But she did me that special day.

It was of a dog, sad and forlorn,
Sitting by a dead child, to mourn,
A soldier carrying a gun stopped to look,
And patted the dog, his head shook.

The picture spoke a thousand words
For in the background there were herds
Of weary folks just passing slowly by,
Not bothering about a sad dog and a child die.

A tear dropped onto the drawers page,
Whether from pity or whether from rage
I could not tell, but the drawing told of pain
It will never stop till we are all at peace again.

Peace that means all children will play,
Not be afraid day after terrible day,
Run with his dog in long green grass
Knowing that no enemy will pass.

One day it will happen, war will cease,
We will dwell in love and in peace,
Love one another, call every man friend,
And know of a joy that knows no end.

Come Sleep

Friday, June 16th, 2000

Come sleep and embrace me in your healing arms,
Fall soft and sweetly over both body and mind
That I may feel that gentle peace that calms
All ills and pain, come sleep, friend so kind.

Come fast and block out the worries of the day,
Free my mind of restless things that flow
Un-welcomed, please help them not to stay,
But cover my mind with your restful glow.

Come and rest this tired body in deep repose,
That I may awake and enjoy the new day ahead,
Not fitful sleep, where I toss and turn and doze,
But a slumber of a child after prayers are said.

Come to others who need a broken heart to heal,
To those who are sick and need your blessed rest,
Leave no one untouched by your arms, I appeal,
Stay this night through, so we may be truly blest

A Nurse’s Prayer

Sunday, June 4th, 2000

Oh Lord please give me hands that heal,
Kind hands that show thy loving care,
Hands that serve and know and feel,
Hands that are often clasped in prayer.

Give me a heart that beats with love,
A heart that understands others pain,
A heart that pleads to thee above
With gratitude to serve my holy name.

Give me strength Lord to serve each day,
Strength to run, walk and not weary,
To hold a dying hand, give my strength away,
So in the end he will not be lone and dreary.

Give me understanding dear Lord above,
Teach me now to really understand
My fellow men, help me show all thy love
By showing I do understand by a touch of my hand.

Give me patience, Lord, to endure each day,
Patience to be kind and thoughtful too,
Patience to never show anger in any way,
Be worthy to be called nurse all life through.

The Rain Came Tumbling Down

Sunday, May 14th, 2000

The other day without warning day turned to night,
The heavy clouds covered any signs of real light.
Everywhere you looked was a funny shade of brown,
Then all at once the heavy rain came tumbling down.

You could not see across the road, cars had to stop,
All scurried for shelter, being soaked by every drop
That came from heaven, has it rained like this before?
Perhaps years ago when there was the flood and Noah.

Window wipers were useless, lights no use at all,
The rain was so loud you could hear no one call,
Streets turned to rivers before your very eyes,
Those that could stayed indoors, they were wise.

Then it slowly stopped just for a little while
To set false security and make you smile.
Them along came more clouds and darkness,
More lightening and thunder rolls to give distress.

Most back yards had new swimming pools,
Flower heads flattened, soaking wet tools.
No birds at all singing any sweet melody,
They could not fly in that, oh, what misery.

Then the sky lightened, but no blue could be seen,
The trees and grass looked a brighter shade of green.
Was the storm over? Not on your life, not just yet.
Lightening ripped the sky again, could we be more wet?

It went on all day, we thought we’d wash away.
Evening brought constant lightening our way,
It danced across the sky as the thunder rolled
I was grateful for the promise made of old.

The Lord would not ever flood the world again,
Just burn it up, but if we’re good, we’ll feel no pain,
I wonder if the rain came to warn us to beware,
That He is in control and our lives prepare.

Prepare for the day when He shall come again
In all his love and glory on this earth to reign.
That rain was scary when it came tumbling down
But not as bad than if He meets us with a frown.
